Everything you need to know about DPI Test
This tool creates a proper laser engraving test by applying Jarvis-Judice-Ninke dithering at different DPI resolutions. Each variant starts from the clean original image.
What is DPI?
DPI (Dots Per Inch) determines how many laser dots are placed per inch when engraving:
- 72 DPI – Very coarse. Fast engraving, visible dot pattern.
- 150 DPI – Low resolution. Good for large areas or speed.
- 300 DPI – Standard quality. Good balance of detail and speed.
- 600 DPI – High quality. Fine details, slower engraving.
How It Works
- Select a test area on your image
- Enter DPI values to test (comma-separated)
- Click "Generate" - each variant will be:
- Resampled from the clean original to target DPI
- Processed with Jarvis dithering (1-bit conversion)
- Saved with correct DPI metadata
Tips
- Select an area with good tonal variety for best comparison
- Lower DPI = faster engraving, larger dots
- Higher DPI = slower engraving, finer detail
