Everything you need to know about Contrast
Contrast increases or decreases the difference between the light and dark areas of your image. Higher contrast makes darks darker and lights lighter, creating a punchier, more dramatic look. Lower contrast compresses the tonal range, resulting in a flatter, softer appearance.
Parameters
- Contrast
Adjusts the tonal difference. Negative values (-1 to 0) reduce contrast, making the image appear flatter and more muted. Positive values (0 to +1) increase contrast, enhancing the separation between shadows and highlights. At 0, no change is applied.
How It Works
The filter pivots brightness values around middle gray (50%). Values above middle gray are pushed brighter, while values below are pushed darker – or vice versa when reducing contrast. This preserves the overall average brightness while changing the dynamic range.
Tips
- Use small positive values (+0.1 to +0.3) to add punch to flat images
- Combine with Brightness for comprehensive tonal adjustments
- Reduce contrast slightly on harsh, high-contrast photos for a softer look
- For more precise control over shadows and highlights separately, use Levels or Curves
