Everything you need to know about Alpha Feather
Alpha Feather softens the edges of transparent areas by blurring the alpha channel. This creates smooth, natural-looking transitions between your image and transparent backgrounds – perfect for compositing, removing hard cutout edges, or creating vignette-style fades.
Parameters
- Mode
Both sides: Blurs alpha in all directions, which may slightly expand the visible area. Inside only: Only reduces alpha near edges without growing the silhouette – ideal for preserving the exact shape. - Strength
Controls how much of the feathering effect is applied. At 0, no change occurs. At 1.0, the full feathering is visible. - Feather Radius
Determines the width of the soft edge. Small values (1–3) create subtle softening. Larger values (10–24) produce wide, gradient-like fades. - Compensate Opacity
When enabled, automatically boosts opacity to prevent the image from looking washed out at larger radii. Recommended to keep this on.
Tips
- Use on cutout images to blend them seamlessly into new backgrounds
- Apply a small radius (1–2) to remove jagged edges from selections
- Use "Inside only" mode when you need to preserve the exact outline of your subject
